Occupational Therapy

​

A child’s “occupation” is playing and learning, and a learner with cerebral palsy may have difficulty doing his or her job. An occupational therapist can help evaluate a learner’s skills for activities, school performance, and everyday living tasks. As well as handling a learner’s physical performance, an occupational therapist can address social, psychological, and environmental factors involved with the learner.

At Pretoria School learners receive occupational therapy on an individual or group therapy basis, it depends on their age and intervention plan.

The occupational therapy service also includes:

  • Seating and positioning

  • Assistive devices

  • Computer access to curriculum

  • Perceptual skills programmes

  • Remedial programmes

  • Pre-vocational groups

  • School-to-work transition

Speech Therapy

​

Speech therapy is provided either on an individual basis or in small groups of 2 - 3 learners per group.  Class group therapy are offered additionally to pre-school learners on a multi-disciplinary basis.

​

Speech Therapy at Pretoria School includes :

  • Oral motor treatment for learners with excessive drooling and/or other oral motor problems such as feeding difficulties

  • Language therapy to teach improved understanding of concepts, vocabulary use, grammatical structures and social speech

  • Language learning, thus teaching the language of education

  • Correct production of speech sounds where applicable

  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication where needed

  • We also do screening of hearing (audiometric tests)

  • Improving listening skills that are needed for academic skills

Physiotherapy

​

Physiotherapy supplies the necessary and appropriate therapy and supportive devices so that learners can benefit from all school activities and achieve optimum independence and positioning of lernears to reduce muscular skeletal complications.

Physiotherapy is given to learners with the following conditions :

  • Cerebral Palsy

         - Quadriplegia

         - Diplegia

         - Hemiplegia

         - Ataxia

         - Athetosis

  • Physical Disabilities

         - Spina Bifida

         - Paraplegia

         - Muscular and Spinal Dystrophy

  • Post Trauma Brain Damage

  • Orthopaedic Disabilities

Psychology Department

​

Our Psychology Department Team consists of an Educational Psychologist and a part-time Social Worker.

​

learners are referred to our Psychology Deapartment via teachers, therapists, multi-disciplinary team and parents and guidance regarding issues dealt with during psychotherapy is discussed and parents are guided in dealing with discipline and other important issues.

​

The Social Worker provides counselling services and support to families in need.  Home visits are made and the relevant authorities notified in critical cases.
